I walked outside and paused on the sidewalk looking in both directions. Which way? A few steps away the beacon of the streetlight sat, glowing golden and for some reason I thought ‘safe’ and headed there. I dug through my messenger bag and pulled out my cell just as the door to the bar opened and a wolf walked out. His eyes found me immediately, no surprise since I was standing in a pool of light, and he came towards me, stopping a few feet away.
“Poppy right?” he asked with a seemingly friendly smile, if you ignored the dripping fangs.
“Right.” I nodded but didn’t reciprocate with his name. I knew who he was though. Logan, with his bright blue eyes and confident manner, he’d had Dulcie and Jen vying for his attention since he’d started coming in a couple of nights ago. I looked down at my cell in hopes he’d just go away but it wasn’t my lucky night.
His footsteps came closer, a slow measured pace that made me want to run, then his shadow fell over mine and it was all I could do to stand still.
“You have beautiful hair,” he said as his hand lifted towards me but I tilted my head away so he dropped it. “I wont hurt you.” He reassured me and I managed a jerky nod of acceptance. “Could I-”
“What are you doing Red?”
Logan moved like liquid, putting himself between me and Tate before I could suck in a breath of relief.
“Tate,” I whispered in relief as he looked at me with a frown, as if Logan wasn’t even standing there.
At the sound of my voice Logan’s shoulders relaxed and he turned his head to look back at me and ask, “You know this joker Poppy?”
Tate growled and his eyes glowed gold and it was so predictable I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest, figuring I was in for a wait as they butted heads. To my surprise, Tate sucked in a deep breath and gave his head a little shake, then he held out his hand and said, “Come here Red.”
Logan looked at me, tense but not aggressive, ready to help if I needed it. I gave him a reassuring smile and stepped by him, placing my hand in Tate’s. “Logan meet Tate,” I said softly as Tate reeled me in then turned me to face Logan, my back to his chest.
“Ah,” Logan said in understanding as Tate lowered his head and pressed a kiss to the side of my neck.
“Walk you home?” he asked and I nodded my acceptance.
“Night Logan.” I waved as Tate slipped his arm around my waist and started walking.
We walked in comfortable silence and I wasn’t at all surprised that he knew exactly where I lived. He let me go as I slid the key into the lock and opened the door.
“So…” I turned to face him, the door ajar behind me.
He braced his hands on the door frame and leaned towards me. “So, he echoed with a smirk.
I looked down at the ground then shyly peeked up at him. He was so beautiful, his face all planes and angles with those glowing golden eyes. “Did you want to come in?” I asked hesitantly.
“Darlin’, I thought you’d never ask,” he drawled with a grin
I smiled happily as I stepped back and he stepped forward. He caught the door and pushed it shut and we were really alone for the first time.
“I’ve been waiting for this for so long,” he said.
And I said, “My what big teeth you have.”
And he said, “The better to eat you with my dear.”
And he did.
