Do It Again

Do It Again

Ask anyone what does November mean, what’s so special about the month, and you’ll probably get a few different answers.

For some it will be that extra day off work because there’s a horse race happening. Yes, in Victoria we have a day off to watch a four minute horse race!

Then there’s that whole turkey day thing which I think may also involve a day off. I know (because it was on television so it must be true) that there’s lots of food involved, maybe a family fight, and the following day some extreme shopping takes place.

Next is that special event that was designed to encourage men to grow beards, known as Movember. I implore all men to please, grow a beard or at the very least, shave your moustache!

But I digress. What was my point? November right? Okay!

So far, three very special but also very exclusionary events. Not everyone is excited about a horse race, or likes turkey, or can grow a moustache after all. That’s why (I think) this last choice is the best one. Everyone can get involved, you don’t need a moustache, and you wont eat so much you’ll fall asleep. In fact, you might even lose weight! What is this amazing, wonderful, marvellous, astonishing event I hear you ask?

Am I overselling it or am I trying to talk myself into something? A bit of both probably.

Here’s the thing, I have several half written novels. I’m not a finisher though, I have issues, pull up a chair, let’s talk. No wait, you’re not my therapist. But this is why this last event may just be perfect for me! The premise? Write a novel in a month, 50,000 words minimum. That’s right, it’s National Novel Writing Month or the err, abbreviation, NaNoWriMo. I know this isn’t really a surprise to anyone, days are being counted and plans being made all over the blogosphere. The amazing Sascha Darlington is planning a sort of group write for the month which I’m looking forward to.

But it made me think (ouch!) that maybe, I could do more than just make pithy comments on Sascha’s novel, that maybe this could be an incentive to me. A catalyst for my transformation from ‘writer’ to ‘novelist’. I’m not great at long-term planning, it actually stresses me out, but give me a deadline and I usually excel. So my theory is that with the 50k target and the November 30 deadline, I should be motivated to actually finish a novel, right? With only a few days to go to sign up and commit, I need to make a decision.

So who’s done it, who’s doing it, who would never do it, or never do it again?

Thanks, working on both will be hard but I’ll give it a go!

  1. I wrote this on someone else’s blog who’s doing nano. Two bestselling novels have come out of nano: Water for Elephants and The Night Circus. I think there are a couple of others. If you think it can happen, it can!

and here’s something from last year’s Movember. Beards…I wholly support.

I have no idea if I can do it but I think I want to try. One best seller on it’s way … no wait! Yours and mine! Two best sellers in the making! Oh maybe my hero will have a beard …
